ERASERDISK README FILE Copyright 2003 by Micro 2000 Inc. All rights reserved. ======================================================================= This README file is in two parts. The first contains the instructions for using the EraserDisk product. The second section contains the Warranty and Licensing Agreement. If you use the EraserDisk program, it is presumed that you have read and understood both sections, and that you agree with the terms and conditions stated in the Warranty and Licensing Agreement. ======================================================================= CONTENTS: Important Notice Using EraserDisk To Start Making a Backup Diskette License Agreement Grant of License Term Your Agreement Warranty Disclaimer Miscellaneous Contact Information ======================================================================= IMPORTANT NOTICE: The purpose of EraserDisk is to obliterate all traces of data on all or part of a hard drive so that the data cannot be recovered by any means. This function has legitimate uses for security and privacy, but it is important for the user to understand that using the product will result in irretrievable loss of data. ======================================================================= USING ERASERDISK: To use the program, place the EraserDisk CD in a bootable CD-ROM drive in the same system that contains the hard drive to be erased, and reboot the system. If there is no bootable CD-ROM, you will need to find a machine that does have one, and use the procedure described in a later paragraph to create a bootable floppy diskette. Then boot to the floppy instead. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TO START: The first screen is the Boot Selection Menu. Press 1 to proceed. At the Title screen, press any key to continue to the Main Menu screen. The menu bar contains two items, Wipe Routines and Quit. >From this point, navigation throughout the program is done with the arrow keys to highlight menu items. Highlighted items are selected with the Enter key, and the Escape key is used to back up to a higher menu level. With the Wipe Routines menu highlighted, press Enter to advance to the next menu. This has four selections: Drive Select - For systems with multiple hard drives, select from up to seven drives. The default is Drive 0, so selection can be bypassed in systems with only a single hard drive. Format Fixed Disk - This selection will do a low-level, factory-style format. This includes a single pass of over-writing the data with all Ones, and re-formatting the sector marks. This and the following three items provide a choice of All or Partial. Partial will require entering the Starting and Ending cylinder and head numbers. Short Security Wipe - This does two over-write passes with alternating data patterns. Long Security Wipe - Six over-write passes are done, with four data patterns. Long Wipe with Format - Combines the First and Third items, and includes a total of seven over-write passes and re-formatting of the sector marks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHEN THE OPERATION IS COMPLETE: If only a partial was done, or the cleaned drive was not the one containing the operating system, Escape to the main menu bar and select Quit. You have a choice to Exit to OS or Reboot System. Exit to OS will only work if EraserDisk was being run in a DOS window. If the entire C: drive was cleaned, neither of these options will function, so simply remove the EraserDisk media. ======================================================================= MAKING A FLOPPY DISKETTE: Find a system with a bootable CD-ROM drive (most name-brand systems less than 3-4 years old should qualify). Place the EraserDisk CD in the drive and boot up. At the Boot Selection Menu, press 2 for the Make Diskette Utility. At the Title screen of the Copy program, press any key to proceed to the Main Menu screen. Insert a formatted floppy diskette in the drive, open the Selections menu, and choose the drive and media. In most cases, you will want to choose Drive 1, which corresponds to the A: drive, and you will choose 1.44 MB as the media. Then go to the Make Backup menu, and follow the prompts to create a bootable EraserDisk floppy diskette. When finished, label the diskette as described in the License Agreement. ======================================================================== LICENSE AGREEMENT: GRANT OF LICENSE: Micro 2000 Inc. grants to you and you accept a license to use the programs and any related materials delivered with this license agreement, as the sole user thereof.
